Why You Can’t Score a Padel Match on Your Phone, Your Watch, or the Glass Wall

In short: Every few months a new scoring idea appears — an app, a smartwatch face, a plastic clicker that sticks to your racket, a sensor glued to the back of the glass. They all fail for the same two reasons, and the reasons are not technical. A score that only one player can see is not a score, it is a private opinion. And a score that costs you a walk to update will simply not be updated. Padel scoring is not an input problem waiting for a clever gadget. It is an agreement problem, and agreement needs a shared display and a button that comes to the player.


Who is the score actually for?

Start here, because almost every failed scoring product gets this wrong.

The score is not for the person tracking it. The score is for all four players at the same time, plus anyone watching, plus — if the court is streamed or the match is part of a tournament — the systems downstream.

A padel match has four people in it who each have their own memory of what just happened. Scoring works when those four memories are collapsed into one shared number that everybody has seen. That is the entire function. Not recording. Agreeing.

Which produces one hard requirement that filters out most ideas immediately: every time the score changes, the new score has to become visible to everyone, immediately, without anyone asking for it.

If you hold that requirement up against the popular alternatives, they fall over one after another.

Why does a smartwatch or a racket clicker fail?

A smartwatch is on one wrist. A clicker taped to the frame is on one racket. A phone app is in one pocket.

So one player becomes the scorekeeper. That player knows the score. The other three do not — they have their own running count in their heads, and the moment those counts diverge, the match stops and the argument starts. The device did not prevent the argument. It just gave one of the four people a slightly more confident version of their own opinion.

And the person with the device is the worst possible arbiter, because there is no way for anyone else to audit them. Nobody saw the score change. Nobody can point at a display and say no, it was 30-30, you pressed twice.

This is not a flaw in the execution. You cannot fix it with a better watch face or a nicer app, because the failure is structural: the display and the input are on the same private device. A watch that four players could all read from the baseline would not be a watch.

The same applies to the small mechanical trackers you stick to the racket handle — the ones with two little wheels or a row of microswitches. They are cheap, they are offline, they never run out of battery, and they are completely useless for settling a disagreement, because the only person who can read them is the person holding them.

What about the traditional flip scoreboard?

The flip board is the honest ancestor of all of this, and it gets the important half right: it is a shared display. Everyone can see it. Nobody owns it. When it says 4-3, that is the score, and there is nothing to argue about.

It is also not free. The standard club unit — an aluminium post with yellow and red plastic flips, correctly called indicators — runs to around €300 depending on whether you take the freestanding, net-post or fence-mounted version. That is real money for a device with no electronics in it, and it is worth holding in mind before anyone dismisses electronic scoring as the expensive option.

Its problem is the other half — updating it.

A padel court cannot have anything standing in it. Players chase balls into every corner and run backwards without looking; anything with a footprint on the playing surface is an injury waiting to happen. So the flip board goes outside the fence, next to the post, in the tennis position.

Which means updating the score requires walking off the court.

In practice, nobody does that after every game. What actually happens is that the board gets updated at the changeover — every two games, when players are already crossing over and can reach it. That is the realistic update interval for a manual board: once every two games.

This is not a criticism the manufacturers would even dispute. The sales copy for the net-post version says outright that mounting it there lets players change the score as they change ends. The changeover is the intended workflow. The product is doing exactly what it was designed to do — it was simply designed for a sport with a different rhythm and a different kind of argument.

And that is the flip board’s real failure, because of what padel disagreements are actually about.

Disagreements are almost never about the game score

Ask any club. The score arguments are not were we 4-3 or 3-3? Those are rare, and easy to reconstruct — someone remembers the break, someone remembers the changeover.

The arguments are about points. 40-15 or 30-30. Was that deuce or advantage. These disputes appear inside a game, they appear a few times per set, and by the time you get to the changeover they are unresolvable, because the only record is four sets of human memory that have already drifted.

So a device that tracks games but not points is solving the problem nobody has. The flip board — and any manual system that requires walking — is structurally incapable of tracking points, because points come far too fast to walk anywhere.

The score has to update at the moment it changes, or it doesn’t do the job.

Why don’t sensors on the glass work?

This is the most common attempt at fixing the flip board’s immediacy problem: mount a sensor or a button on the back glass wall on both sides. Player wins the point, taps the glass, score goes up.

It fails on tempo.

Padel is not tennis. There is no ball-boy, no towel, no bounce-bounce-bounce routine. A point ends, the ball is already being picked up, and the next serve is happening. Points run into each other continuously — that continuous rhythm is a large part of why the sport is fun.

Now insert a two-metre walk to the back glass and two metres back, after every single point, while three other people stand and wait. Multiply by around 250 points in a three-set match. Then add the part that nobody mentions: after tapping, the player still has to find a display somewhere and check that the tap registered and that the score is now correct — because a sensor is an input, not a confirmation. If there is no visible board, the sensor has moved the problem, not solved it. If there is a visible board, then the sensor is just a worse button in a worse place.

Then there is the part that only shows up after installation: power.

A sensor on the glass has to be listening all the time. It cannot know a tap is coming, so something inside it stays awake for every hour the court is open, whether anyone is playing or not. That is a continuous draw, on a device stuck to a glass wall outdoors where running a cable is not an option. So it runs on a battery that has to be recharged or replaced — two sensors per court, twelve on a six-court club, and every one of them dead at a different time.

Nobody maintains that. What happens instead is that one sensor goes flat on a Tuesday, that court quietly stops scoring, and within a month the club has decided the whole system is unreliable.

A pocket remote has the opposite power profile. It does nothing at all until the button is physically pressed, then sends a burst lasting about a tenth of a second and goes back to drawing nothing. There is no idle listening, because the player is the wake-up signal.

The arithmetic is worth doing, because it settles the question rather than asserting it. A press costs roughly 0.3 µAh. A pair of coin cells gives you somewhere around 500,000 presses once you allow for pulse de-rating. A padel point takes about twenty seconds, so a ninety-minute match is around 270 points, of which any one remote records about half — 135 presses per match. On a Spanish court running seven hours a day, which is what Playtomic’s data shows for a mature club, that is roughly 630 presses a day, every day.

That works out at about two years per set of batteries. For context, the same transmitter in its usual job — opening a garage door twice a day — would take several centuries to get through the same number of presses. A padel court asks about three hundred times more of it than the application it was designed for, and it still runs for two years.

A padel scoring system has to accept a fundamental constraint: the input has to come to the player. The player will not go to the input. Any design that asks a player to travel — two metres or twenty — will be abandoned by the third game, and the abandonment will look exactly like the club deciding the system “didn’t work.”

Can’t you just mount a phone on the fence?

You can. It fails twice.

First, it is the same walk. The phone is on the fence, the players are on the baseline, and every score change is a round trip. Same tempo problem as the glass sensor, with the added risk that someone taps the wrong thing on a touchscreen with sweaty hands.

Second, and more fatal: a phone screen cannot be read from the other end of a padel court. A padel court is twenty metres long. The far baseline is roughly eighteen metres from a phone on the back fence, often in full sun, often with a glass wall and a fence between the eye and the screen. Even if the app is beautiful, the score is unreadable — which means it fails the very first requirement, the one about all four players being able to see it. And spectators, coaches and anyone streaming the court see nothing at all.

Screen size is not a detail here. Visibility from both ends of the court, in sunlight, is the requirement. Everything else is secondary.

But what about a Bluetooth button paired to the phone?

This is the serious version of the phone approach, and it deserves a serious answer. Pair a small BLE clicker to a phone running a scoring app, drop the clicker in your pocket, and the walk problem disappears. The player presses where they stand.

Notice what has just happened, though. The moment you add a physical button in the player’s pocket, you have conceded the entire input argument — the app was never going to be tapped mid-match, and everybody involved knows it. What remains is the display. And the display is still a phone screen on a fence, eighteen metres from the far baseline, in the sun. The button has made an unreadable score update faster.

Then there are the failure modes the button brings with it.

It has to stay connected. Bluetooth maintains a link, which means it can lose one. A padel court is twenty metres of glass, steel mesh and moving bodies — a genuinely hostile environment for a 2.4 GHz link that has to hold for ninety minutes. We have watched this fail in the field, on a show court, with an audience. A dropped connection during a match is worse than no system at all, because the score silently stops advancing and nobody notices until three points later.

It has to be paired. Every session, to somebody’s phone. Which raises the question a club cannot answer: whose phone? That phone locks itself, takes calls, runs out of battery, updates its OS overnight, and leaves the court when its owner does. A scoring system that depends on a player’s personal handset is not infrastructure, it is a favour somebody is doing the club.

It has to be charged. A BLE button sleeps, but it still wakes to advertise and still holds a connection. That is a charging routine — the same maintenance problem as the glass sensors, in a smaller package.

A one-way 433 MHz transmitter has none of this. There is no pairing, because there is no connection — the remote shouts an ID and the scoreboard listens for it. There is nothing to drop, nothing to re-establish, and nothing to charge. It is a less clever technology, chosen precisely because a padel court punishes cleverness.

So what actually works?

Two pieces, and they have to be separate.

A shared display, in the one place a court can accommodate one. Under the net. It is the single position on a padel court that no player runs into, and it is equidistant from both baselines. Double-sided, so both teams read the same number at the same time, with independent brightness on each face — one side of a padel court is usually in sun while the other is in shade, and a single brightness setting will always be wrong for one of the two teams. Spectators see it too, from outside the glass.

A physical button that travels with the player. Not an app, not a touchscreen. Two remotes — one per team, red and blue — each small enough to sit in a pocket or clip to the waistband of a pair of shorts or a skirt, with a button large enough to find by feel. That last part matters more than it sounds. What you see on court is a player win the point, turn, walk backwards to the baseline, and press their team’s remote without ever looking down at it or at the board. The scoring action costs nothing, so it actually happens, every point, all match. And because it only transmits when pressed, there is nothing to charge between matches — it lives in the same drawer as the balls and works when someone picks it up.

And a beep. This is the part that gets left out of every design that starts from a screen. When the score changes, the scoreboard beeps. That sound is the broadcast — it tells all four players the score has just been updated, including the two who were not looking at the board. If the change was wrong, someone objects within a second, while the point is still fresh and correctable. Silent updates accumulate silent errors, and those surface three games later as an argument nobody can settle.

Shared display, portable input, audible confirmation. Remove any one of the three and the system stops working — not partially, completely.

The pattern in that table is the point of the article. Every alternative gets one or two columns right. None of them get all four, and the columns are not a scorecard — they are gates. A scoring system that fails one of them fails completely, because the club goes back to counting out loud within a week.

FAQ

Isn’t a smartwatch fine for casual play? For your own record, yes. For settling what the score is between four people, no — nobody else can see it. Casual play is actually where disagreements are most common, because there is no referee and no stakes to keep people honest.

Why not put a tablet or screen inside the court? Anything with a physical footprint on the playing surface will be run into. Padel is played into the corners and off the walls, at speed, backwards. The under-net position is the only viable one, which is why it is where our scoreboards go.

Couldn’t AI cameras remove the need for any input at all? Different question, different article — we covered it in Scoring as a Service. The short version: camera systems are strong at highlights, analytics and streaming, and they still need somewhere to display a score that all four players can see and correct. The display requirement does not go away.

What happens when someone presses the button by mistake? The beep tells everyone the score just changed, so the mistake is caught immediately and corrected from the remote with a long press. That is exactly why the audible confirmation is not a nice-to-have.

How much charging and maintenance does this need? The scoreboard is powered. The remote is not charged at all — it only draws power in the instant the button is pressed, which on a court in constant use averages out at around two years per set of batteries. Any system built on always-listening sensors is the opposite: every unit is awake all day and every unit needs charging, which is a job somebody at the club has to remember to do.

Do you need one remote per team? Yes — two, one per team. One player on each side carries it, and each team records only its own points, which is why nobody ever has to hand anything over or wait on the opposition. It also halves the presses per remote, which is where the two-year battery figure comes from. Both remotes are paired to a specific scoreboard and belong to that court, so a remote carried onto the next court does nothing — there is no way to accidentally score somebody else’s match.
